Mesa Man Starts House Fire Trying To Exterminate Bees

Wednesday, Mar. 30, 2011

A Mesa man accidentally started a fire in his attic after he tried to use brake fluid and a cigarette lighter to eradicate a beehive.

Crews responded to a report of a small house fire near Broadway Road and Center Street around 11 a.m. Wednesday, Mesa Fire Capt. Forrest Smith said.

A small part of the attic burned, and damage to the rest of the house was minimal Smith said.

Smith warned residents to Call a trained professional when extricating bees from their homes.

According a University of Arizona College of Agriculture website, honey bees live in large groups of up to 60,000. Single bees should be left alone, but if multiple bees are spotted, look for bees flying in and out of cracks in walls where hives can be hidden. Not all bees should be killed as they pollinate many fruits and vegetables as well as make honey.
