Bees Attack in Mesa Neighborhood

MESA, Ariz. - A Mesa neighborhood was swarmed by killer bees Sunday afternoon, when a hive was disturbed by a bee exterminator. The exterminator thought it would be an easy job, so he brought his family along. Three of them were rushed to a nearby hospital, after they were stung multiple times at about 12:15 p.m. A woman believed to be the bee exterminator's wife suffered at least 70 bee stings, and two children under the age of 10 suffered 50 stings each.

The home was vacant. The homeowner realized he had a problem when he was getting it ready to rent and saw swarms of bees. The bees were found under two plywood boards in the home's backyard. The bee exterminator was wearing a bee suit, when it was believed he disturbed the bees. He ran to the front of the home, and that's when the bees followed.

Neighbors said the front and back of the home were covered with bees, and a massive Swarm flew down the street. One man said the bees followed him all the way to his door. Mesa firefighters used a special foam to kill the bees. They evacuated part of the neighborhood. A fourth person was also stung. He was a teenager who refused treatment.

Man attacked by bees in Tucson dies

TUCSON - Authorities say a man stung hundreds of times by a Swarm of bees at a Tucson park has died.

Oscar Navarro was attacked by bees while walking in Joaquin Murrieta Park on Friday night.

Pima County authorities say an autopsy Tuesday showed that the 46-year-old Navarro died from "mass envenomation", which means venom from the bee stings.

Tucson Fire Department firefighters sprayed the bees with foam before they could get to Navarro and render aid.

He was taken by paramedics to St. Mary's Hospital in serious condition and was pronounced dead at 7:13 p.m. Friday.

County chief medical examiner Dr. Gregory Hess says Navarro was the first death from a bee attack this year in Pima County.

Landscaper attacked by bees in Phoenix and was Hospitalized with multiple bee stings

A landscaper was admitted to a Phoenix hospital with life-threatening injuries after suffering multiple bee stings Thursday morning, according to Phoenix Fire Department officials.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was working at a Phoenix home near the 3200 block of East Rose Lane when he disturbed a beehive about 8:30 a.m., Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Scott McDonald said.

The bees stung the man "multiple, multiple" times, McDonald said.

Firefighters believe the beehive had been nestled between the outside wall of the home and the home's roof, McDonald said.

Phoenix firefighters found the man in the front yard of the home and he was taken to an area hospital, McDonald said.

Firefighters were unable to immediately contact homeowners about the incident, McDonald said.
